Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of shortchanging the Meru people in the distribution of key development projects in the Mt Kenya region.
Of major concern to Governor Kiraitu is why President Uhuru ignored the Meru people in sharing the Sh30 billion Mau Mau road, which links four counties in the Mount Kenya region.
“We are very disappointed with our friend because the 540 kilometers of the Mau Mau road has been given to Central Province alone. Not a single kilometer was given to Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Meru Counties,” he says.
The Sh30 billion Mau Mau road is a legacy project by President Uhuru Kenyatta with many feeder roads linking Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu and Nyandarua Counties.
“Our people were at the forefront during the struggle for independence. Baimungi and Mwariama hailed from our community, but it’s unfortunate that the Mau Mau road has no share for the Meru people. It shows political deceit of the highest order,” Kiraitu said.
Kiraitu also cautioned Meru residents against falling victim to euphoria created by Presidential candidates in efforts to secure victory in the forthcoming general election.
“Politicians cannot be trusted with the tons of promises they make during the campaign season. The Meru people should shun leaders who spread hate, propaganda and lies. I urge the Mt Kenya East people to support and join Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) which will champion for their interests.” Kiraitu said.
The Governor was speaking at a thanksgiving service for AIPCA Arch Bishop Samson Muthuri at St Nicholas AIPCA Church, Kithaku.
The 540 kilometers road project has proved to be a boon for the four counties, with property along the route appreciating in value.
In Murang’a County alone, the Mau Mau road covers 154 kilometers, and is expected to be a major boost of agriculture and ecotourism.
“The road cuts across rich agricultural areas of Mount Kenya region, it will not only honor Mau Mau war heroes, but also greatly boost local farming activities and ecotourism,” says KeNHA Chairman Eng. Wangai Ndirangu.
