The North Imenti Student’s Association (NISA) now wants Nominated MP Halima Mucheke to issue a public apology over the ugly incident at DP Ruto’s Makutano meeting on Sunday last week.
The students’ forum in North Imenti led by the chairperson Winnie Muthamia says it’s unfortunate that instead of helping young people to achieve their dreams, leaders are now misusing them to settle political scores.
“I condemn with the strongest terms possible, the heinous and barbaric act portrayed by Hon. Halima Mucheke on 26th of last month,” reads part of the statement.
Drama unfolded at the Makutano meeting where a section of rowdy youths heckled North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood and Municipality MCA Elias Murega, both Halima’s opponents in the 2022 general elections.
The same group of youths cheered as Hon. Halima Mucheke made her remarks, scenes that have attracted criticism from several leaders in Meru.
Beatrice Karwitha, another contestant for the North Imenti parliamentary seat termed the heckling a display of backwardness and lack of focus.
“The legislator used comrades to cause and station hooliganism for her own political mileage and gains. She enticed them with handouts instead of lobbying for bursaries and scholarships. It’s a big shame!,” says Winnie Muthamia.
The students’ leadership has now called for an urgent meeting with all political leaders, Church leaders and youth leaders in efforts to ensure sanity ahead of the 2022 polls.
“The rate at which students are being subjected to ungodly acts has drastically doubled in recent days within North Imenti and Meru County. We hereby call for an impromptu meeting with political leaders, the clergy, youth leaders and elders to deliberate on the best way to curb this vice,” says Ms. Muthamia.
