Sabastian Njagi Mwangangi alias NKÙRI ya Tharaka is an MP Aspirant – Tharaka constituency. He has distinguished himself from the crowd as a vicious, pro-people champion. This has earned himself a community name NKÙRI ya Tharaka meaning the community alarm.
Several Tharaka residents believe that Mwangangi is their horn that alerts society on impending dangers by nearly commenting on all issues affecting Tharaka population with unmatched gusto and courage. He never wary from rattling wasp’s nets in bid to protect Tharaka community.
Early Life & Education
Sabastian Mwangangi was raised in the footsteps of Gikingo hills in Kathangachini Location. He went to Mubuura Primary, Yombo Primary, Mpunguru Primary & Kabuabua Primary schools at his formative stages in life.
He demonstrated his abilities even in School after emerging the Top student at Tharaka Boys with a Mean grade of B+ of 73 in 2004 KCSE becoming top boy in the Tharaka Constituency.
He was enrolled at Maseno University situated in the lakeside city of Kisumu County to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with information technology where he majored with Marketing and IT.
Mwangangi has a master’s degree in Diplomacy and International studies from the University of Nairobi. Currently, he is a PhD finalist in Diplomacy & International relations & the Head of Marketing at Kenya School of law.
He prides to be a pioneer member of two associations, the Diplomacy Scholars Association of Kenya as well as Africa Digital Diplomacy Research Group based in WITS University South Africa. He is also the first Kenyan to head the newly created department of Marketing at the prestigious Kenya School of Law.
Mwangangi is set to resign before 9th February 2022 to comply with IEBC regulations. He believes that Tharaka can only change if the leadership kicks in practical projects & deflate implementing theoretical development projects based on talk-shows, Facebook and WhatsApp gimmicks.
1. Water Agenda
Sabastian Mwangangi believes he is the cure of the pervasive thirst that is heavily biting Tharaka community. He says he will build dams along dry river beds & permanent rivers across Tharaka to cure the perennial menace and better farming activities as well as lobbying for boreholes for every needy primary school in the constituency.
2. Education Agenda
To improve learning conditions, Mwangangi says if elected Tharaka MP, he will overhaul the workmanships at present. He refers current classrooms as outdated stone structures. He says he will be building storey classrooms, & libraries in schools to boost performance.
In day schools he promises to build laboratories as well us do facelift of classrooms done by his predecessors via painting & putting up tiles.
“Parents have struggled and students lost huge study man hours because fee problems and to minimize incidences of students being sent away because of fees, I will increase bursary award from the current Ksh, 3,000 to a minimum of Ksh 15,000 per Child. I will be paying half fees to all widows/single mums’ kids in school.” He says.
Mwangangi says that some schools like Tharaka boys need be upgraded to a national school status and therefore he will lobby for upgrading our Secondary schools. Lobbying for Promotions for deserving Tharaka Civil-servants will also top his agenda if elected.
3. Roads Network
Mwangangi laments in his tenure he won’t be launching earthen floor roads in the 21st century he says he will be lobbying roads for tarmacking to bitumen standards Tharaka major roads.
His priority roads include Marimanti- Mitunguu Road, Gatunga – Usweni Road, Mitunguu- Ruungu – Karocho- Kaongoni- Marimanti Road, Kithaga- Matiri- Kamarandi-Kamanyaki- MureoMburaga Road and Miomponi – Gatunga Junction and Lastly Miomponi- Mukothima- Gaciongo Road.
Mwangangi who has since been described as the unrelenting voice of civilians argues that those leaders in the larger Tharaka-Nithi aren’t genuine with public service. He says they are preoccupied with massaging public problems with public relations stunts instead of combating them. He believes he is the ultimate solution.
“I have the energy to serve Tharaka, I have the intellectual acumen to lobby for Tharaka, I have the charisma to engage & I have the passion to seek for solutions to their problems’’. He says.
4. Land Issues
Mwangangi who is a victim of Mchabini-Kindani Skirmishes which left 9 schools torched and vandalized and people of Tharaka descent evacuated from their lands asserts that the issue of land must be taken seriously.
“We were chased in our farms in 1996/1997 like wild rats to date we are squatters in our own country and no one seems to care,” he says.
Once elected as Tharaka MP, Mwangangi has vowed to tirelessly search for border title deeds & seek government compensation for people who were evicted in their farms in Machabini area currently living as IDPS.
He has promised to ensure all stray title deeds spilling over to Tharaka territory and owned by ghosts’ owners are cancelled and affected areas properly adjudicated.
Other projects he has lined up as Tharaka MP if elected includes the push for job hook-up for youths, Fund Sports directly via Location committees he will create where each Location will receive Ksh.300,000 per year.
He decries that Tharaka markets are too dusty and therefore he will lobby for Cabros/Tarmacking of Tharaka Markets centres.
“Politics is a song I know too well and I perfectly understand how to dance because my hips can revolve faster.” He says.
He also asserts that Politics is a game and he knows how to play it in new versions of our times and finally he says Politics has been my dream and in August 2022, he will realize it at whatever cost.
