North Imenti MP Abdul Rahim Dawood has defended the clergy over claims that churches have been actively accepting money from proceeds of crime.
Speaking during the Meru County Leaders Prayer Breakfast in Makutano on Friday, March 04, Hon. Rahim explained that it is not possible for Pastors and Bishops to distinguish between ‘clean money’ and that gotten through graft and other dubious means.
“We are human and we are all prone to error. I am a Muslim and I know that the most important thing is believing in God and doing the right thing.” Hon. Rahim said.
The legislator further echoed Bishop Muheria’s earlier sentiments that it remains the responsibility of the politicians and all congregants to ensure that they do not forward dirty money to the churches.
“Money has no color. And we all know that giving is between an individual and God. If you know that your money is clean, then you can bring it to the Church,” he added.
Earlier this week, Bishop Muheria took a swipe at President Uhuru’s sentiments made during the much publicized Sagana 3 meeting, where he argued that church leaders have a special place in hell for accepting the proceeds of crime.
“And I will tell you that even our church leaders have been compromised by huge donations from corrupt politicians. I want you to know that it is wrong to lie using the Bible and you are surely heading to Jahannam,” he said in an apparent reference to his Deputy, William Ruto.
But according to Bishop Muheria, tainted money was just an opinion formed by the Head of State, and that every believer has the responsibility to ensure they do the right thing in their acts of giving.
“There is nothing like tainted money. That is just your opinion. I wish there was a litmus paper to distinguish between dirty money and clean money. It is not the amount that really matters but the intention of the giver.” stated Muheria.
In a rejoinder, DP Ruto told the Head of State to respect the church as it was a holy place, noting that his close association with religion and the Word of God has sustained him to where he currently is.
Peaceful Elections
Today’s interdenominational prayer breakfast was organized by members of the clergy from protestant churches across Meru County and was graced by Dr. David Oginde, the Bishop Emeritus of Christ is the Answer Ministries (CITAM)
The session was organized offer prayers for Meru County as the August 9 general elections draw closer, for the County to enjoy a peaceful electioneering period and for God’s guidance to the people in making the best choices.
According to Hon. Rahim Dawood, the general election is a one day event that should not be the reason for any fighting or exchange of unsavory words.
“We need peaceful elections and all politicians should sign a charter committing to keep the peace. The emerging signs of acrimony in Meru politics should be addressed early enough.” says Hon. Rahim.
Also present in today’s prayer meeting was Meru Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu, who emphasized the need for integrity, honesty, and accountability among leaders in the management of public resources.
“We had a very tough battle, even with many of our staff. People want to steal and facilitate shady deals. At one time we had to bring in a member of the clergy to help in combating corruption,” Ntuchiu said.
Leaders present at the prayer breakfast echoed the message of peace ahead of the general election, among them Senator Mithika Linturi, Meru County Assembly Speaker Joseph Kaberia, Municipality MCA Elias Murega and several other leaders.
