Imenti South MP Kathuri Murungi now says it’s the best time for Meru leaders to unite and appoint a regional kingpin.
Kathuri took to Social Media to rally leaders from the larger Meru region to take advantage of the current regional political occurrences to appoint a kingpin.
According to Hon. Murungi, the Meru community risks missing out on key political benefits without a representative in the national politics.

“Call for a leaders’ conference to declare Ameru Kingpin. Like all other communities, we need our political leader with no further delay. We must trust one kiongos to lead us,” he says.
Kathuri’s sentiments however have not appealed to a section of Meru residents, with some terming the proposal useless and a non-issue.
“We don’t need nonsense kingpin’s in Meru. All elected leaders should focus on developments, service delivery to Mwananchi. Good roads, access to clean water, electricity, Good market for our produce, Employment creation, etc,” says Pius.
“Nothing like kingship, it’s fallacy, a scam, a folly let’s talk of leaders of integrity with good governance,” says Kaburu Julius.

Still, some believe that a Meru Kingpin would help the Ameru community be part of major political negotiations ahead of the 2022 polls.
According to Evans Gituma, Meru risks being swallowed by the Mt. Kenya kingpins from the Kikuyu community.
“I agree with this kiongozi. We need a Meru kingpin, we don’t want to be included in the Mt. Kenya kingship. We need a person who will be representing our problems to the national level, make better coalitions that will benefit Meru County, not individuals,” says Mr. Gituma.
Pundits argue that the perpetual rivalry between Agriculture CS Peter Munya and Governor Kiraitu remains an impediment to such an arrangement.
There are those who believe that the two rivals need to pave way for new blood to steer the Meru community to better levels.
“A Meru Kingpin Yes, but not Kiraitu or Munya, these two will always be behind Kikuyus. Something we need to outgrow as Merus,” says Ken Mawira.
Do you agree with Hon Kathuri Murungi that Meru needs to appoint a regional Kingpin?
