Lady Justice Martha Karambu Koome is a Kenyan judge, lawyer, and the current Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya.
She has previously been a practicing court of appeals judge in Kenya. She was appointed as Chief Justice in April 2021, replacing David Kenani Maraga who retired in January 2021.

Education
After completing her high school education, Martha joined the University of Nairobi for a bachelor’s degree in law and graduated in 1986. She proceeded to the Kenya school of law where she pursued and attained a postgraduate diploma in law in 1987. She was subsequently admitted to the Bar as an advocate that same year.
She further pursued his studies and graduated in 2010 with a master’s degree in public international law from the University of London.

In 1986, Martha graduated from the University of Nairobi with a bachelor’s degree in law. In 1987, she pursued additional studies and attained a postgraduate diploma in law. The following year, she was admitted to the bar as an advocate.
In the one-party era, Martha defended victims of instability and political detainees. In addition, she led the charge for a constitutional amendment to Section 2A and to establish judicial independence.
In 2003, she returned to Kenya and served as a judge of the court system. She was later promoted to a more senior position and in 2011, she became a judge of the Court of Appeals. In 2020, she was nominated for the 2020 UN person of the year award where she came in second.
Martha Koome surprised many during the vetting process of judges after she made a choice to give an interview in public instead of the normal, behind-closed-doors method. She was very sensitive about corruption in the judicial system and revealed that she had retired from criminal law during her time as a practicing lawyer because of the vice.
Justice Martha Koome was nominated as the Chief Justice on April 27, 2021, by a commission that interviewed aspiring judges. The commission then forwarded her name to the national assembly for approval by the president.
On May 19th, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta finally appointed Martha Koome as Kenya’s first female Chief Justice. She signed her oath into office on May 21st and has been a respected figure in Kenyan history since then.
