The just concluded 2-day Meru tour by DP Ruto is bound to cause major political changes in the region in the coming days.
While several aspirants took advantage of the monumental visit to launch their campaigns for various political seats in Meru, a section opted to keep calm and wait for the ‘right time’ to make public their stand.
To his advantage, DP Ruto has received support from a majority of MPs in Meru County, among them Kubai Kiringo (Igembe Central), John Mwirigi (Igembe South), John Mutunga (Tigania West), Moses Kirima (Central Imenti), Kathuri Murungi (South Imenti), Joseph Kabeabea (Tigania East), and nominated MP Halima Mucheke.
Meru Senator Mithika Linturi, a majority MCAs and aspirants have also declared their support for DP Ruto’s movement, a real headache for Governor Murungi as 2022 approaches.
Apparently, several aspirants joining Ruto’s camp are serving in Kiraitu Murungi’s administration, something that has sparked fury from the Chief of Staff.
Among those expected to be shown the door is Tigania West Town Administrator Anderson Mwiti Kathendu, who has declared his interest in the Meru Senatorial seat. Kathendu contested for the same seat in 2017 but lost to Mithika Linturi.
Also on the chopping board is the Meru County Roads Executive, Julius Taitumu who is eyeing the Igembe North Parliamentary seat on a UDA Party ticket.
Taitumu accompanied DP Ruto in his Igembe tour, and addressed the meeting at Mutuati in Igembe North. He has however been openly struggling to play wise in efforts to retain his job in the Kiraitu administration.
“Asanteni sana watu wangu. Today, I accompanied DP William Ruto in his meet-people tour of Igembe North Constituency in Mutuati Market. Economic sustainability is the key to prosperity of every society,” says Taitumu.
In a scathing attack directed at Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, DP Ruto said that efforts to impose ODM Leader Raila Odinga on the Meru people will be proved futile in due course. South Imenti MP Kathuri Murungi echoed Ruto’s sentiments, saying that the Meru Governor will sink with Raila Odinga in the 2022 general election.
“Wale wanatuletea Kitendawili wajue watazama pamoja na yeye. Watu wa South Imenti na Meru mzima wamekataa kitendawili,” Kathuri said at a public rally in Nkubu town. (Those trying to sell Mr. Odinga should know that they will all lose in the 2022 polls. The Meru people will not vote for Raila Odinga)
