Meru County Governor Kiraitu Murungi and Chief Administrative Secretary Ministry of Education Zack Kinuthia today presided over a pass-out for Meru youth Service at Igoji in South-Imenti Sub-County.
The 150 graduates are former street children recruited into Meru Youth Service empowerment program through a special 2021 intake 2021
The pass-out ceremony was held at Igoji MYS Training Camp and was officiated by Governor Kiraitu and CAS State Department of Education, Hon. Zack Kinuthia who was the Chief Guest.
Kiraitu rescued the 150 youth from the streets and recruited them into Meru Youth Service(MYS) for mindset change and hands-on skills training before undergoing technical education at a later date.
CAS Kinuthia, hailed MYS terming the program as being unique in Kenya, Subsaharan and entire Africa. At the same time, he pledged the ministry’s support to 11 who will enroll for advanced courses at Meru National Polytechnic.
This is the third cohort after Meru Governor, Kiraitu Murungi rolled out an empowerment program for youth – MYS
The ambitious program has seen 1000 youth empowered through the much-needed vocational training skills in 2019.
The second cohort of 600 youth recruited in 2020 is currently undergoing technical training in various county Vocational Training Centers.
The Meru Youth Service (MYS), a first in Kenyan counties was launched three years ago.
Since then it has seen over 5600 young people from various parts of the county register and get recruited and thousands enrolled.
After undergoing weeks of training, the recruits pass out ready to join the world and showcase their skills and information learnt in various jobs.
MYS a fulfilment of Mr Kiraitu’s 2017 manifesto is fashioned after the National Youth Service (NYS), and includes paramilitary and technical training with recruits engaging in manual and skilled labour activities across the county
According to Meru County Youth leader Marvin Kimathi alias Marvo Mzito,150 youths are expected to graduate today.
