The Kiirua St. Theresa Mission Hospital now joins the list of the biggest hospitals in the region, having been successfully gazetted as a Level 5 Referral Hospital.
The Referral Hospital has a bed capacity of 235 and offers a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient health services, serving Meru, Laikipia, Tharaka Nithi and as far as Embu, Isiolo and Marsabit Counties.
The upgrade to level 5 status makes Kiirua Mission Hospital a teaching and referral facility at par with other level 5 facilities in the country. This makes the facility a center for specialized care and surgeries like spine surgery, joint replacement surgery and delicate brain surgeries, all covered by NHIF.
The upgrade comes at a time when the hospital has started offering internships to medical students from different parts of the country, and the opening of a ultramodern critical care unit among other key developments.
To provide a reliable Quality Assurance System for the Health Services, the Ministry of Health reviewed and expanded the Kenya Quality Model to cater for the different KEPH service provision levels in 2010.
Among the areas of evaluation include clinical care, management support and leadership, staff motivation, staff competence, adequate resources, content and process of care, referral systems, and the active participation of clients and the community.
Medical facilities in Kenya are currently organized from Level 1 to Level 6, based on these Essential Packages for Health Levels (KEPH).
Level 1 facilities are mainly at the community level, with Level 2 encompassing Dispensaries and Clinics. At Level 3 are found Health Centers, Maternity Homes and Sub District Hospitals.
Level 4 facilities are the Primary Facilities which include District Hospitals, while Level 5 hospitals are Provincial Referral Hospitals. At Level 6 are a few Tertiary/ National Hospitals.
In addition to quality outpatient and inpatient services, Kiirua Mission Hospital is a choice to several Meru residents, thanks to it’s well equipped specialized clinics such as the Dermatology clinic, Ear, Nose, Throat (E.N.T Clinic), Gynecological Clinic, Orthopedic Clinic, Pediatric Clinic, Oncology Clinic and Cardiac Clinic among others.
