Between 1994 to 1998, Kathuri was at the Egerton University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management. He was a tenant at the Hollywood and Buruburu hostels.
While in college, he picked up martial arts purely for self-defense, considering the events during the time, when several leaders were fighting for multiparty democracy in the country.
“You never knew if someone would attack you any time during that agitation era,” he says.

In 2017, Kathuri defended his South Imenti seat on an independent ticket, and again defeated all his opponents with a considerable margin.
Kathuri Murungi has declared his interest in the Meru Senator seat, and will be running on a UDA ticket alongside Mithika Linturi as the gubernatorial candidate.
