Just a few hours after ODM leader Raila Odinga’s camp went into celebration citing endorsement from Governor Kiraitu Murungi, the Meru Governor has now dropped a bombshell.
“We shall engage with serious Presidential candidates and choose the one who will put Meru at the center of government and take our development priorities seriously,” Kiraitu now says.
Citing confusion in yesterday’s meeting at Serena Hotel, Kiraitu says he never endorsed Raila Odinga for president, instead, he was only invited to listen to his ideas.
“Raila Odinga is a front runner. I have known him for the last 40 years. He has great ideas for a radical social economic transformation of this country. That is why we decided to hear him yesterday,” says Governor Murungi.
His latest sentiments were echoed by Meru Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu, also present at the Serena meeting, but who has now made an about turn on the Raila endorsement by the Meru County leadership.
In a message to newsrooms last evening, Ntuchiu said the Meru people are ready to negotiate with all Presidential candidates including DP William Ruto ahead of the 2022 polls.
“As Meru County, we have not committed ourselves to any party that is not our own and where our community interests will not be given prominence. ODM has its shareholders mainly in Nyanza, while UDA enjoys some popularity in Mt. Kenya,” says the Deputy Governor.
Governor Kiraitu and Mr. Ntuchiu’s comments come in the wake of sharp criticism from several other Meru leaders concerning what they refer to as Kiraitu Murungi’s political suicide in endorsing ODM leader Raila Odinga’s 2022 Presidential bid.
