Imenti South MP Kathuri Murungi has rubbished the recent endorsements from Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi to ODM leader Raila Odinga ahead of the 2022 general elections.
Speaking a few hours after Kiraitu and several Meru business persons met Mr. Odinga at Serena Hotel, Kathuri (popularly known as Kamashinani) says he is yet to be convinced that Governor Murungi has the interests of the Meru people in his engagements with Raila Odinga.
Although Governor Kiraitu insists the recent engagements with the handshake partners are meant to secure the interests of the Meru people, the South Imenti legislator says he is yet to be convinced.
“I do not want to base politics on personal friendships. We will be bound by interests of our people. We are forming a party that will focus on the interests of the people of Meru and the region so that we can also be in the national political arena,” Kiraitu said shortly after meeting Raila Odinga.
The recent developments also come a few days after Royal Media boss SK Macharia asked Mt Kenya leaders to be honest with Mr. Odinga about his obvious unpopularity in the Mt Kenya region.
However, President Uhuru Kenyatta has made several efforts to convince the region to fully support his handshake partner in his quest to become the 5th President of Kenya.
This has not been very fruitful, a problem compounded by several Mt. Kenya MPs’ alignment to DP Ruto’s camp, something not bound to change any soon.
In Meru County, only Igembe North MP Maoka Maore does not belong to Ruto’s camp. Igembe South MP John Mwirigi, Igembe Central MP Kubai Kiringo, Tigania East MP Josphat Kabeabea, Buuri MP Mugambi Rindikiiri and Senator Mithika Linturi are all members of Ruto’s Tangatanga group.
