North Imenti MP Abdul Rahim Dawood has thanked Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi for his timely intervention that led to the gazettement of the new Imenti East Subcounty in Imenti North Constituency.
Speaking to the Meru Daily News this afternoon (17th March), Hon. Dawood says the Governor and several other leaders worked tirelessly to ensure the dream of the new subcounty was realized.
“I would like to sincerely thank Governor Kiraitu Murungi, Agriculture CS Peter Munya, Mr. Patrick Bucha the Housing Secretary, Amb. Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi, the previous and current MCA’s for their contribution towards this success.” says Hon. Rahim.
The legislator has also lauded the efforts of his predecessors in North Imenti for their efforts for the same cause.
“I would also like to thank all the North Imenti Constituency leaders, including the former MP’s, the late Hon. David Mwiraria and my predecessor Hon. Silas Muriuki for their valuable ideas about the same cause,” he says.
A public participation meeting convened at Kamunde Hall on 19th May 2018 had proposed that North Imenti subcounty be divided into two sub counties.
The meeting was presided over by area MP Abdul Rahim Dawood and the County Commissioner, attended by five area MCAs, the District Officer, Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs and several other leaders.
However, it took the intervention of Governor Kiraitu Murungi a few weeks ago to have the proposed new administrative units gazetted.
The gazette notice dated 17th march 2022 indicates that North Imenti Sub County will now get an additional Sub County called Imenti East with its headquarters at Kiamwitari in Thuura.
Imenti North Sub-County will now be comprised of Municipality, Ntima East and Ntima West Wards, while the new Imenti East Sub-County is comprised of Nyaki East and Nyaki West Wards.
“We are now waiting for the new Divisions, Locations and Sub-locations to be gazetted to make complete our request from 2015 when this quest started. With the new Sub-County we will get more recruitments to the disciplined forces and other job opportunities and in future a new Constituency.” says Hon. Dawood.
Announcing the realization of the new administrative units at the Meru County Headquarters on Thursday morning (17th March 2022), Governor Kiraitu expressed his satisfaction with the development, saying the sub counties were delivered as per his request submitted on February 11th.
The request by the Governor also yielded three sub-counties in South Imenti, the much awaited Igoki division, Kithangari East location and Kirima-Kaarine sub-location .
Imenti South has now been split into three sub counties and renamed Nkuene/Mitunguu sub-county with headquarters in Nkubu, Abogeta sub-county with its headquarters in Kanyakine and Igoji sub-county with its headquarters in Igoji.
“The creation of these service delivery units has effectively put an end to political and clan rivalries and controversies that have divided the people of Meru in past years and ensured better resource allocation and distribution.” says Governor Kiraitu.
In recent days, South Imenti Constituency has been a beehive of activity with various camps scheming and counter-scheming. A few weeks ago, area MP Kathuri Murungi initiated a collection of signatures for what he termed a petition to have the new sub counties gazetted.
On his part, Governor Kiraitu accused the legislator of failing in his mandate, and termed the petition a useless endeavor aimed at taking residents in circles.
“We have experienced a lot of clan politics in South Imenti for the longest time now. This issue has now been resolved. I urge all leaders to desist from politicizing and further inciting the public about geographical boundaries.” says Governor Murungi.
