Governor Kiraitu Murungi has launched the Meru County Governor’s Cup Football Tournament in efforts to identify and nurture youthful talent across the 45 Wards in the County.
The tournament promised way back in 2019 will bring together 450 teams from across the County in a series of matches culminating to an award ceremony at a yet to be communicated date and venue.
Each of the participating team will receive sports kits and balls from the County administration. The tournament begins early February at the ward level, then escalates to the Sub County level and will finally culminate with the finals at the County level in the month of June.
The winning team at the County Level will receive Ksh 500,000, with the first and second runners up pocketing Ksh 300, 000 and Ksh 100, 000 respectively.
In addition, the top three teams in each of the eleven sub counties will receive Ksh 100, 000 and Ksh 50, 000 and Ksh 30, 000 respectively while the top team in each of the 45 wards will take home a sum of Ksh 50, 000.
Speaking during the launch event for the tournament, Governor Kiraitu urged the youthful population to take keen interest in the political dynamics and rally their support behind the Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) ahead of the August polls.
CEC Dr. Rufus Miriti says the tournament is testimony to Governor Kiraitu’s commitment to youth empowerment, an addition to several similar programs such as the Meru Youth Service.
“I urge our young people to take advantage of this tournament to keep themselves busy, especially during this campaign season where politicians use them for their own political gain.” says Dr. Miriti.
There has been an increase in the number of football tournaments organized by political leaders across the country as the August polls approach, in efforts to seek an audience with the youthful population.
