Igembe South MP John Paul Mwirigi has refuted claims that the County Government of Meru built the KMTC Maua Campus.
The MP has stated that he has eroded all the respect he had for Governor Kiraitu Murungi, following today’s state of the County address. During the address, Governor Kiraitu said that his Government participated in the establishment of the institution.
“I hereby openly challenge the Governor to prove to the people of Igembe South that indeed the County Government contributed a dime in constructing and operationalizing the KMTC Maua Campus.” says Hon John Paul.
The legislator has not only challenged the County boss to provide evidence of his participation, he has also claimed that Kiraitu was against the establishment of KMTC.
“I openly challenge the Governor to refute claims that his government once told the ministry of Health that at Maua, they could not find enough public land to construct a KMTC campus.” says Hon. John Paul.
According to the first time legislator, Governor Kiraitu should live up to his position as a respected elder, while ensuring he always remains truthful to the Meru people in his quest to make Meru great.
“It’s sad and tragic that the very elders we expect to uphold good morals are the same people lying openly to our people. The Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi is a politician many people including myself have for long held in high regard.” he says.
In his annual State of the County Address at the Meru County Assembly Chambers on Wednesday afternoon (16th March 2022), the Governor highlighted several achievements in the Health sector, among them four new KMTC Campuses.
An official statement from the KMTC Board dated January 20121 indicates that the NG-CDF, through the efforts of Igembe South MP Hon. John Paul Mwirigi had released Ksh. 25 million for the project.
“With this, we have put up 6 classrooms, an administration block, and a library. Abolition block is under construction. In this financial year, we have allocated an additional Ksh. 25 million for the expansion of the facility,” said KMTC Board Chairperson Prof. Philip Kaloki.
Meru County Government, through Governor Kiraitu Murungi, on the other hand, had promised to set aside Ksh. 10 million towards putting up six more classrooms.
It is not yet clear whether the 10 Million was remitted to the institution.
“As we speak, we also doing the new Theater at Mikinduri Level 4 Hospital. We have made history by simultaneously establishing 4 Medical Training Centers in Meru County, in Maua, Kanyakine and Kangeta.” Kiraitu said.
In his response, Hon. John Paul however accuses the Governor of not only lying but also failing to deliver on several other promises made to Igembe South residents.
“I challenge the Governor to highlight to the people of Igembe South the effort(s) he has put in place to ensure Maua Level (IV) Hospital is elevated to a Level (V) hospital. At the moment the facility has no male wards nor an outpatient facility.”
“The maternity wing which was built by Former MP Kalweo is currently stretched beyond limit. With a bed capacity of 32, the wing can barely serve 1/3 of the over 100 women wishing to deliver their kids at Maua Level (IV) hospital.
The legislator now wants Governor Kiraitu to specifically highlight the projects he has initiated/completed in Maua Town and Igembe South Constituency at large.
“I humbly request the Governor to respect the people of Igembe South by not lying to them. If he has not done as expected in Igembe South, let him come out and explain himself to the people of Igembe South as well as sell his manifesto on what he intends to do if he will be re-elected.” says Hon. John Paul.
