Florence Kajuju is the first female Member of Parliament in Meru County. She comes from a humble background, having schooled at CCM Primary School in Mucuune, Tigania East.
She then proceeded to Mikinduri Secondary School in Tigania East and later joined Moi Girls School for her A-levels before proceeding to the University of Nairobi for her law degree.
Hon. Kajuju’s childhood dream was to become a lawyer, and she has been committed to this ambition. She had a successful stunt as deputy chair of the Law Society of Kenya and was the second woman legislator from Meru County in close to thirty years.
Kajuju draws her inspiration from Hon. Elnina Karimi, the first woman MP from Meru County and the only one until now.
Kajuju believes in an equal world for women and girls. She worked as a lawyer and chairperson of the Meru Bar Association for a number of years.
On matters litigation, Florence Kajuju has helped hundreds of people with legal problems. She also built a strong community network and leveraged it when she ran for County Member of Parliament (Woman Representative).
After that, she joined the LSK (Law Society of Kenya) and was elected the Vice-Chairperson, a position she held for three years.
In Parliament, Florence Kajuju was a distinguished member of the Justice and Legal Committee and was appointed as Chairperson of the Regional Integration Committee, which deals with East African Community matters such as trade and regional peace.
Kajuju’s Meru Agenda
The miraa trade, water and women empowerment are the key issues that form Kajuju’s agenda for the Meru people.
Having come from an area with water problems, Kajuju believes that this can be changed to ensure every household in Meru has access to clean water for home use and irrigation.
1. Water
For many households in Meru county, Kenya, the challenge of accessing clean and safe drinking water is difficult.
Women spend time searching for it, while hundreds of school children spend hours each day in search of it. This contributes to their poor academic performance in school.
Hon. Kajuju is a strong advocate for water. With more access to this precious resource, the county’s school performance and societal productivity will improve.
She’s been successful in lobbying the president and the national government for water dams, and she intends to continue fighting for more after she’s re-elected.
Upon her re-election, Hon. Kajuju intends to improve the county’s access to water. She plans to construct more dams in the county and better the water sources. As a result, schools will become more productive and society will be happier.
2. Miraa
Banning miraa, Britain’s key export to the African country, has been a disaster for farmers and created economic turmoil. The farmers need this cash crop to survive.
After years of hard work and lobbying to improve the legislation, Miraa managed to help families and increase income for miraa farmers in Kenya. Miraa is so important for Kenya for it is the key export to Britain.
The honorable Hon. Kajuju intends to enhance miraa farming by lobbying for legislation that will provide the farmers with important services.
This legislation will create a thriving economic activity that will enable the farmers to have access to advice and other services.
3. Women Empowerment
Women in Meru County are faced with discrimination, marginalization, and lack of resources. As a result, women have not had access to leadership positions for too long.
Kajuju wants to do something about this, by lobbying for increased resources that will empower women and girls and help them participate in more elective and leadership positions.
