Meru County Government has bought a refrigerated Fish Transport Track, 10 commercial Fish Freezers, storage containers, and Fishnets in a bid to support fish farming.
Deputy Governor Hon Titus Ntuchiu who presided over the occasion said the equipment would enable the county to operationalize the Kanyakine Fish processing Factory and open a fish market in Ng’onyi.
Hon. Ntuchiu highlighted the government would support Youths through the Aquaculture Business Development Programme(ABDP) to groups that seek to venture into fish farming with an initial seed capital of 90,000 and train 1146 fish farmers across the county.
CAS Fisheries and Livestock, Dr. Lina Jebii Kilimo said through her department they would continue partnering with the county government by supporting value addition in the promotion of cottage industry and continuous provision of fishing equipment .
According to Dr. Kilimo, the support accorded by Governor Kiraitu Murungi Government to the fish farmers has the capability of not only meeting local demand but exporting to other Counties and beyond. Also, offer food and nutrition security as part of the Big 4 agenda.
