The battle for the Meru Woman representative seat is one of the most competitive races in the Mount Kenya East region, and it is shaping up already.
Former Meru County Investment and Development Corporation (MCIDC) Chairperson Felicity Nkirote Biriri has now joined the race, and will be contesting on a Devolution Empowerment Party (MBUS ) ticket in the August 9 polls.
With the exit of lawyer Florence Kajuju and Kawira Mwangaza from the race, Felicity Nkirote is being watched with a lot of interest as the August 9 General Election draws closer.
Kawira Mwangaza, who won the seat on an Independent ticket in 2017, has declared her interest in the Meru Gubernatorial seat.
“Today I officially announce my candidature for the elective post of Woman Representative. Meru County is ripe for enlightened, forward thinking leadership for our women, young and old,” reads part of Nkirote’s statement.
Felicity Nkirote Biriri is an alumni of the US State Fortune 500 mentorship program where she was attached to the Vice President Walmart. She has served in several capacities in the public sector, with her most recent job being the chairperson of MCIDC, a position she held for four years until her resignation earlier this week.
“Together with a team of seasoned leaders and professionals, we are finalizing our manifesto that will strive to fill the existing gaps and provide dynamic, tangible solutions to women, girls and the community at large. We know that if we build our women, we will together build a strong Meru Nation,” she says.
According to Felicity, the unity of the Meru people shall form a bigger part of her campaign manifesto.
“I will work towards realizing a Meru Nation that is united, peaceful and prosperous. My dream is to secure economic empowerment and freedom for all,” says Felicity.
She was a member of the Meru County assumption of office Committee that oversaw the smooth transition from Peter Munya to Governor Kiraitu Murungi in 2017.
Felicity also served at the Meru University of Science and Technology for three years as a University Council Member, Chair of the Finance Committee and a Member of the Human Resources Committee.
A few other candidates have shown interest in the MBUS ticket for the same seat.
