Agriculture CS Peter Munya has been a center of focus by all stakeholders in Meru politics for several weeks now.
His most recent move was his decision to ship out of the Gubernatorial race, something that was received with immense joy in Governor Kiraitu’s camp.
Immediately after Munya’s declaration, Kiraitu Murungi moved to congratulate and thank Agriculture CS Peter Munya for his decision, saying he was now a relieved man who would spend less
“I was ready to face Munya as my main competitor. I must say congratulations and thank you to him. It makes my work a bit easier,” Kiraitu said in a presser.
“We had planned a very elaborate campaign and you have heard me say before because this is going to be my last campaign. I was going to throw everything into it to ensure that I win again. So if my brother has made my life easier then this is a gift to me from God.”
Governor Murungi reiterated that he is willing to work with CS Munya for the benefit of the Meru people, despite the pair having been pegged as rivals for several years.
‘Bado Mapambano’
Munya however insists that Governor Murungi has failed the Meru people and brought upon them a lot of suffering in the past five years, and should therefore not be given a second chance.
“I have heard reports that I shipped out of the race because of fear. I would like to tell him that I just considered the future of Meru and Kenya at large. Even in my absence from the race, we will not just vote like robots. We must first negotiate and have a clear agreement on how our people will benefit from the next County administration,” says Mr. Munya.
Of major concern to the Agriculture CS is the sharing of cabinet slots and other key job opportunities in the County administration, a concern echoed by his close allies on several occasions.
“We must agree on the rightful share for our people. We will not sit down and watch all the County jobs awarded to one village in Meru. We will have to negotiate with the nest Governor. He must clearly give us our rightful share,” says CS Munya.
“Usituletee maringo. [Kinya mwiji no ataanwe umweeru, akaa nthaka],” Munya said in Kangeta. (loosely translated to – “Our hands are not tied. We may even support a young boy who will take care of our interests.”)
The Agriculture CS was speaking in Kangeta during the commissioning of the Nyambene new KCC Milk Plant. He however insists that he will only support a Gubernatorial candidate under the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.
Maoka Maore
Igembe North MP and National Assembly Majority Whip Maoka Maore has termed Munya’s sentiments unnecessary and misplaced in the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
The legislator says Governor Kiraitu Murungi is currently the only Azimio Gubernatorial candidate, and that Munya should focus on his roles at the National Government.
“If Munya wants to come back to run for the Meru Gubernatorial seat, then he should know that he is time-barred. His sentiments are not of any benefit to Azimio la Umoja and President Uhuru Kenyatta,” Maore now says.
According to the Igembe North legislator, Munya’s confrontation with Kiraitu Murungi was permanently resolved after the 2017 polls. Maore also distanced himself from Munya’s recent remarks that Governor Kiraitu Murungi colluded with DP Ruto in 2017 to steal his victory.
