Even after striking a deal between PNU and ODM ahead of the 2022 general elections, Agriculture CS Peter Munya is not among Raila Odinga’s preferred running-mates.
A close look at the list of preferred candidates for the position reveals that Munya may be forced to seek homage in Meru County in the next political season.
Among the top candidates fronted by Uhuru Kenyatta’s camp include Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanyui, Peter Kenneth and Laikipia Governor Nderitu Mureithi.
A few days ago, several elected leaders from Murang’a openly endorsed Peter Kenneth as their preferred choice.
Speaking at Kihoya AIPCA church in Murang’a, MPs Muturi Kigano (Kangema), Wangari Mwaniki (Kigumo), Mary Wamaua (Maragua), Peter Kimari (Mathioya), and Nduati Ngugi (Gatanga) said Kenneth stood the best chance to deputise Raila due to his high leadership qualities.
Nderitu Mureithi has received support from Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi and a few other Governors and MPs from Central Kenya.
Munya however says that his options are not limited to deputizing Mr. Odinga, with his troops insisting he will be battling it out with Kiraitu Murungi for the Meru top seat.
This is despite speculations surrounding the duo’s ‘handshake’ during Raila’s tour in the region, where they vowed to lock out DP Ruto and his UDA brigade from the region.
In a quick rejoinder, Munya reassured his supporters that the handshake has nothing to do with the gubernatorial race.
